Artist's Statement
Kemlyn Tan Bappe grew up in Singapore. Her work has an East meets West influence. She is Peranakan, a culture that emerged between the 15th and 16th when Chinese immigrants intermarried non-Muslim indigenous peoplein Southeast Asia. Her work is rich with color and symbolism. "Conservation is important to me. Whether it be in our culture or our environment, we must be balanced in the way we live." Her paper batik and other artwork are found in collections interntionally. Tan Bappe is also a teaching artist, helping students make connections between core academics with the arts. Tan Bappe lives in Mount Pleasant, Iowa with her husband and their three children.
